You are free to choose your lawyer. But how do you navigate the options?

Trust comes first

You will be sharing sometimes very personal information with this person, and may go through a difficult period in your life together. You need to feel a connection: don’t hesitate to meet with a lawyer before committing, to ask questions about their working style, fees, and availability. An initial meeting will help you gauge whether you feel comfortable.

The firm, not just the individual

Whether it’s a solo practitioner, a small team, or a large firm structured into practice areas, each format has its advantages. A smaller structure often provides more personal follow-up, while a larger firm can mobilize multiple areas of expertise for a complex case. Find out who will be handling your case on a day-to-day basis.

The field or area of expertise

While all lawyers can handle a variety of cases, many develop deeper expertise in certain areas over the course of their careers. These are referred to as "preferred activities," or even recognized specializations after an evaluation process (indicated by an asterisk * in our directory). For a specialized case (tax law, corporate law, family law), it’s best to choose a lawyer who regularly practices in that area.

In short: look for the right combination of expertise, a firm suited to your case, and above all, a relationship built on trust.
